Waikiki store robbery turns into murder case

The 44-year-old 'Ewa Beach woman injured in a Waikiki robbery last Tuesday has died and Honolulu police say they will seek new charges against the Japanese national charged in the case.

Michiko Sakata, co-owner of Seawind Surf and Street at 353 Royal Hawaiian Ave., died Friday at Straub Clinic & Hospital. The medical examiner said she died from brain damage caused by strangulation.

Responding to a holdup alarm at Seawind Surf and Street at 1:24 p.m., police found Sakata unconscious on the floor with a man sitting on her back, according to a police report filed in District Court on the arrest of Daiki Iba.

Iba, 33, was charged with attempted murder and second-degree robbery before Sakata's death. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for today at District Court although police yesterday reclassified the case as a homicide. Iba is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.

The court document said police recovered $8,270 in cash from Iba's left rear pants pocket at the scene. Bobby Sakata, who co-owned the business with his wife, told police that about $10,000 was missing from a cash box that was found open and empty.

Michiko Sakata was not breathing when police arrived but two officers resuscitated her. She was pronounced dead Friday at 10:45 p.m.
