Hanauma center wins second award

The Hanauma Bay Marine Education Center has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects, Hawai'i Chapter with the 2003 Award of Merit for the facility's people-oriented solutions.

The institute praised the city for the way the center "preserves the scenic beauty of the crater rim by remaining largely indiscernible from the public approach and the floor of the bay."

This is the second award the center has received. The first was from the Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau for architecture, given in April.

Wailupe pier work requested

A Wailupe Circle resident wants to improve the concrete footing and support piling of an existing pier, according to a public notice on the project.

Residents wishing to comment on the application should submit concerns to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources at 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 131, Honolulu, HI 96813.

Makakilo school receives 11 PCs

Makakilo Elementary School received 11 computers from the Estate of James Campbell on Friday.

The $10,000 contribution raised the number of computers at the school to 71. Some of the computers will be put into the school's lab in the library; the rest will be placed in fifth-grade classrooms.

Principal Gary Chun had requested the PCs because the school has only Macintoshes for student use. Kapolei Middle School, which most of the students will attend, uses only PCs.
