UH men's golf team 7th in WAC Championship

The University of Hawai'i fell from second to seventh after yesterday's second round of the Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Houstonian Golf Club in Texas. The final round is this morning.

The Warriors trailed Tulsa by just a shot after an opening round 290. Yesterday, they shot 301 and dropped 20 shots behind leader Fresno State (571). The Bulldogs shot 9-under-par 279 yesterday. Tulsa is at 576.

Tulsa's David Inglis, the defending champion, leads the individual competition at 69-137. He is two ahead of FSU All-American Nick Watney, who shot 66.

UH junior James Beston (72-143) is tied for fifth. Teammate Matt Kodama (74-146) is 12th and Justin Kim (78-78-148) 21st.

WAC women's champion Tulsa will play in the Central Regional next week. Nevada and San Jose State earned spots in the West.

• UH's van Hoff honored: University of Hawai'i women's player Karin van Hoff was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation third team yesterday, days after leading the Rainbow Wahine to a seventh-place finish at the MPSF Championships.

The lone senior on the team, van Hoff, from Barendrecht, Netherlands, was also voted Most Inspirational by her teammates in awards announced at last night's team banquet.

Other members who took home awards were freshman Kristy Bagnall with the Kanaka Makamae Award (Most Outstanding), sophomore Beth Novick with the Kanaka Ho'omaika'i Award (Most Improved), sophomore Tracy Andersen for the Kanaka Pono Award (Coaches' Award), and Darcy Scott-Hosaka with the Leslie Kerfoot Kama'aina Award (Outstanding Local Player).
