One of the Honolulu police motorcycles escorting the funeral procession of a fellow motorcycle officer crashed into a car on Punchbowl Street today, injuring its rider and destroying the motorcycle.

The injured officer, who was not identified by police, was in good condition at The Queen’s Medical Center.

He had been riding toward the Pali Highway onramp and had just crossed Vineyard Boulevard ahead of the procession at about 9:10 a.m. but he was in the wrong lane, said Sgt. Lorenzo Ridela of the Vehicular Homicide Section.

The bike slammed into John Southwell’s 1994 Chevy Lumina while he sat at the head of a line of cars waiting for the funeral procession to pass.

“He was in and out of control,” Southwell said. “I had a bad feeling like he was going to hit my car.”

As the motorcycle got closer to Southwell’s car, it “wobbled” and the officer laid his bike down, Southwell said. The motorcycle then slid into the Lumina.

Southwell had no idea how fast the motorcycle was going.

The impact tore off the rear wheel of the motorcycle, sending it about 40 feet up the road as the bike spun out.

Southwell was not injured in the crash and said he hoped the officer was OK. “I needed a new car anyway,” he said.

Police briefly closed the section of Punchbowl Street just mauka of Vineyard Blvd.

The funeral procession, which was able to get past the accident, was on its way to Hawaiian Memorial Park in KÅne‘ohe for the burial of motorcycle officer Ryan Goto. Goto was killed in a freak collision last week while riding his motorcycle.
