Hilo band is ready to rock

Sideline Hero — from left, Mikala Gahan, Juan Robinson, Scott Wagner, Jacob Joao and Dawson Leyva — celebrates the release of its latest CD, "Life Force Engaged," with an all-out rock fest 6-9 p.m. Saturday. This punk metalcore band from Hilo will get things going at the Pink Cadillac, while O'ahu acts Of Aesthetic Beauty, Next2Nothing and Flem Face jam with their emo sounds. Tickets to this all-ages show are $5.


All the weekend's a stage

This weekend is your last chance to catch several local stage productions before they close on Sunday.
  • The powerful docu-drama "The Laramie Project," above, closes out Manoa Valley Theatre's season with a look at the townsfolk of Laramie, Wyo., as they try to come to terms with a hate crime. Performances are 8 p.m. today and Saturday, and 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $25 general, with a $5 discount for seniors and military; $10 for those 25 and younger. 988-6131.
  • Kumu Kahua Theatre's last show of the season, "Aloha Las Vegas," is a reprise of its season-opening hit about a family preparing to move to Las Vegas. Showtimes are 8 p.m. today and Saturday, and 2 and 8 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $5 to $16. 536-4441.
  • "Henry IV, Part I," the second in a series of plays featured during the Hawai'i Shakespeare Festival, ends its two-week run. Shows are at 8 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre. Tickets are $16 general, $14 seniors and military and $8 for students. 235-7433.
  • 'Ohi'a Productions' revised and renewed version of "On Dragonfly Wings" was inspired by the story of Alana Dung and her fight against leukemia. Broadway veteran Mary Gutzi performs in one of the lead roles, as Dora Dragonfly. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday, and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hawai'i Theatre. Ready, set ... fun!

Enjoy the beauty of the Leeward side and support a good cause at the same time Saturday during the 21st annual Kolekole Pass Half-Marathon or scenic six-mile downhill run/walk. Participants can choose to join in the 13.1 mile half-marathon course through the Wai'anae Mountains or take part in the downhill run/walk. Start time is 6 a.m. for either course, at Schofield Barracks. Entry fees are $30 by today, or $40 on the day of the race, with proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society. After the race, join in the Family Fun Day from 6:30 a.m.-noon at Lualualei Naval Magazine in Nanakuli. There will be craft and food booths, an inflatable jumper and a cancer smart shop. Polo, everyone?

With polo season in full swing, join in horseplay during the Wahine Challenge Polo Match Sunday. The all-women game, a benefit for Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii, takes place at the Waimanalo Polo Field, across from Bellows Air Force Station. Gates open at 1 p.m., with the game starting at 2:30 p.m. Gordon Fredias entertains after the event. A free champagne bar will be open during the game, with a potluck dinner to follow. A concert of hula and music

The Ho'olauna Hou ("Come, Relax and Enjoy") concert Saturday is a presentation of Papa 'Uniki Laua'e, with Na Hanona o ka Halau Hula Pa Ola Kapu a me Na Wa'a Lalani Kahuna 'o Pu'u Kohola, under the direction of kumu John Keola Lake. This year also celebrates the graduation of three kumu hula, five chanters and eight dancers.

The first part of the program is the public ho'ike of the graduating Laua'e class, dedicated to chants and hula dancers. The three new kumu hula will dance solos during the 'auana part of the program. Na Hoku Hanohano award winners Na Palapalai, above, will also be featured, along with Kanilau. The doors open at 7 p.m., concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at Mamiya Theatre, on the St. Louis School campus. Tickets are $15 general, $10 for children 12 and younger. 566-6969.


A hands-on kind of expo

Get those creative juices flowing at the eighth annual Sew-Quilt and Craft Expo this weekend. The Blaisdell Exhibition Hall hosts exhibitors from Hawai'i, the Mainland and Canada; among the attractions will be stage presentations, make-and-take projects, workshops, a quilt display, demonstrations and entertainment. Expo hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. today, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $6 general, while children up to 13 are free. 527-5400, www.pcmexpo.com.


Bon dancing at the mall

The Young Okinawans of Hawaii present the Windward Mall Summer Festival Saturday, to celebrate 100 years of the Okinawan o-bon season in Hawai'i. There will be a bon dance featuring taiko drumming, with appearances by Yamada Dance Group, Iwakuni Dance Club and Young Okinawans of Hawaii. Check out the culture and craft fair, with T-shirts, flower arrangements, pottery and other products. Be entertained by the Chinese Lion Dance Association and Na Kupuna O Koolau. And if you're hungry, food booths will serve up andagi and shave ice. It all happens 5-9 p.m. in the Windward Mall parking lot. Admission is free. 235-1143.


All play and no work

Let's hear it for the kids! The Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii and the Children's Discovery Center are hosting National Kids Day on Sunday. First Lady Laura Bush is honorary chairperson of Kids Day, a day to honor America's children and emphasizing quality time with their parents. There will be a picnic in Kaka'ako Park, with lunch available for purchase and tents set up for shade. The day will be filled with entertainment, games and a pizza-eating contest. Kids Day takes place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; admission is free. 524-5437.
