Four prep players earn Fitzgerald Scholarships

Advertiser Staff

Angela Bolo, Sarah Galon, Nicole Sakai and Ashley Spencer are the 2003 Jean Fitzgerald Scholarship winners. They were selected by Hawai'i Community Tennis Foundation.

Galon, a Leilehua graduate, and Sakai (Pearl City) earned $2,000 scholarships. Bolo (Lana'i) received $2,500 and Spencer (Waiakea) $1,500.

The program is a memorial to Fitzgerald, an active participant in the Hawai'i Pacific Section when it first started.

Applicants are chosen based on personal statement, high school academics and extra-curricular activities that "reflect the type of individuals that Fitzgerald would have encouraged to excel in college."

USPTA convention: Tom Daglis, United States Professional Tennis Association Master Professional and national vice president, will be the keynote speaker at the annual USPTA Hawai'i Division Convention in October at Punahou School.

The theme of the convention is "The Power of Knowledge" and for the first time the USPTA Hawai'i Division and the USPTA San Diego Division are teaming up to do a convention.

Also speaking at the convention are Don Green, David T. Porter, Rosie Bareis, Eliot Teltscher, Lee Couillard and Ann Pangan. For more information, contact Couillard at 944-5835 or lcouillard@punahou.edu.

More scholarships: Rachel Sugiyama, 9, and Kimberly Salsedo, 12, members of the Kilauea Junior Tennis Club, were awarded scholarships to attend the Kamehameha Schools summer tennis camp.

Both are participants in the USA National Junior Tennis League and were selected based on sportsmanship and future promise.

Incentive awards: The Hawai'i Pacific Section has announced that Tasia Gerona of Wahiawa and Waialua's Brandon Sakata are recipients of 2003 USTA Tennis Foundation Incentive Awards.

Gerona and Sakata are participants in USTA youth tennis programs and have shown a strong commitment to academic achievement.

Gerona plays on the Leilehua High School varsity team and Sakata is on the Waialua team.

Each receives $500 that can be used for tournament fees, tennis lessons and/or fees for participation in USTA and other tennis organization programs.

Kapalua Open Championships: The Kapalua Tennis Garden on Maui will host the 23rd Annual Kapalua Open Tennis Championships, Aug. 29 through Sept. 1.

The USTA-sanctioned event includes open 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, and 3.0 divisions with men's and women's singles and doubles. The tournament purse is $5,000 plus awards.

Entry fee is $50 per person, and deadline for entry is Aug. 25.

The Kapalua Villas, the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and the Kapalua Bay will each offer special room rates for the tournament.

For more information and entry forms, call tournament director Janet Arnds at (808) 669-5677.
