908 run through wilderness

A field of 908 competed at three distances in the 21st Annual Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Runs last Saturday at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.

In the marathon, Volcano's Dan Goltz was the first male to finish in 3:14:28 and Kea'au's Susan Cordell was the first female finisher in 4:19:54.

Honolulu's Pete Boksanski (1:06:04) and Christal Cuadra (1:13:01) won the 10-mile event. Cuadra's time was 31 seconds off the record of 1:13:32 set by Autumn Johnson in 1997.

In the five-mile run, Seigo Miyano of Japan finished in 34:22 to win the men's division and Volcano's Heather Harlan ran 42:03 to win the women's race.

Gagen to oversee Maryknoll softball: Patrick Gagen has been appointed head of Maryknoll School's softball program, overseeing its varsity and intermediate teams.

Gagen's experience includes coaching the 2001 Swiss National team, and coordinating teams in New Zealand and Sweden. He was also the coach of Brigham Young-Hawai'i from 1997-99 and Radford from 1992-94.
