There is now a Hawaiian dynasty in outrigger canoe paddling.

The Hawaiian Canoe Club won its third consecutive Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (HCRA) State Championship Regatta in convincing fashion yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Hawaiian, a club based at Kahului Harbor, amassed 331 points in the 37-race regatta. Kailua was a distant second with 291, followed by Kai 'Opua (290), Lanikai (246) and Hui Lanakila (234).

"I don't like the word dynasty, but we won three years in a row, and that's pretty darn good in anybody's book," said Paul Lu'uwai, coach of Hawaiian's powerful youth program.

In the canoe history books, only two other clubs have had longer streaks: Outrigger won nine in a row from 1984-92; Healani won four in a row from 1971-74.

Hawaiian's three-peat was highlighted by an overwhelming number of paddlers. Hawaiian registered a record 36 crews for yesterday's regatta, and in the end, the numbers added up.

"Hawaiian had the numbers from the start," Kailua head coach Jimmy Bruhn said. "But they won on the water, too. They earned it."

Kai 'Opua head coach Mike Atwood added: "It was convincing. You can look at their numbers and all that, but they also have some really good crews that kept scoring points."

Long before Hawaiian's championship streak started, the club was known for its solid youth paddlers. The tradition continued yesterday.

Hawaiian won only three races overall, and two came in the youth races — girls 13s and girls 14s.

"There's pressure, but we try not to think about it," said Pualei Kaaa, who steered the girls 14 crew to victory. "We're happy as long as we score points to help the club."

In the 13 youth races, Hawaiian scored 129 points, which no other big club could match. It could have been more, but a victory by Hawaiian's boys 14 crew (and a potential 15 points) was disqualified for a false start.

"We knew the key to our success was our kids coming out on top," Lu'uwai said. "They're our bread and butter, I think everybody knows that by now."

By the end of the youth and novice races, Hawaiian already had a 50-point lead over the competition.

"Give credit to our novices, too," Lu'uwai said. "They gave us important points."

From there, it was a matter of the Hawaiian adults maintaining the lead. The crew of George Dagan, Mael Carey, Rick Nu'u, Tyson Kubo, John B. Guard and Stewart Kawakami did their part by winning the men's freshman race.

"The keiki got us off to a good start, which we're used to," said Nu'u, who is also the Hawaiian men's coach. "We wanted to show that the adult program can hold its own as well."

Kailua and Kai 'Opua each won four races, but could not match Hawaiian's overall consistency.

"This victory is sweeter than the others, because it took the whole club," Lu'uwai said. "Our kids were great, but they didn't dominate. It really was a team effort."

Kai 'Opua registered 34 crews — the largest contingent ever for a Big Island club — and got off to a fast start with victories in the girls 12 and mixed 12 races.

"It was looking good for a minute," Atwood said. "But then Hawaiian came on strong and we fell off and that was it."

Lanikai and Outrigger topped the regatta with five victories each.

Lanikai won the prestigious men's senior race for the 11th time in 12 years. The crew of Kekoa Bruhn, Peter Binney, Mike Judd, John Foti, Kai Bartlett and Jim Foti completed the 1›-mile course in 11 minutes, 9.11 seconds to beat Wailea by 13 seconds.

Kai 'Opua, which snapped Lanikai's 10-year winning streak in the men's senior division last year, finished third.

"Heck yeah there was some fuel because of last year," said Jim Foti, who steered the Lanikai crew. "We haven't quite been together all year, but we never compromise the senior race for states. We always go all out to win states."

Outrigger was equally impressive in the women's senior race, completing the 1›-mile course in 12:56.66 to beat Hui Nalu by 19 seconds. The winning Outrigger crew: Traci Phillips, Paula Crabb, Donna Kahakui, Jen Horner, Mary Smolenski and Kisi Haine.

"This is a surprise to tell you the truth," said Haine, who steered the crew. "We never practiced with this crew before, so we had no idea what to expect. We just kind of clicked today."

Even though Hawaiian did not win any races in the last half of the regatta, the drama was all but erased when the crew of Matt Pauole, Eric Widell, Johnson Agpoon and Judson McCandless placed second in the men's open-4 race — the 32nd race of the day.

"The last couple of years, everything was put on the keikis," Pauole said. "This year, we wanted to help them out."

Prior to its current streak, Hawaiian had never won a state championship (in fact, no club from Maui had ever won one). Now, Hawaiian has won a championship on Kaua'i (2001), the Big Island (2002) and O'ahu (2003).

"Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined it," Lu'uwai said. "For years, everybody said we could only win on Maui. Now look."

For the other teams, the problem might be figuring out a way just to get close to Hawaiian.

"It's back to the drawing board ... again," Atwood said.
