Pearl City captures Little League opener

Pruett's one-hitter, homer key 2-1 win: Alika Pruett pitched a one-hitter and hit a solo homer as Pearl City rallied for a 2-1 victory over East Boise, Idaho, in the opener of the Little League Major (ages 11-12) Northwest Regional at San Bernardino, Calif.
Pruett allowed an infield hit to the game's first batter, who eventually scored an unearned run on a fielder's choice. He finished with seven strikeouts.
Pearl City trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the last scheduled inning. Pruett tied the score with his home run, and Bryson Namba eventually scored the game-winner on a passed ball with one out and the bases loaded.

Little League 15-16: Hilo scored 10 runs in the first inning en route to pounding Arizona, 21-2, yesterday in the opener of the Little League Senior Western Regional at Lemoore, Calif. Kulea Bondallian had three hits and pitched a two-hitter, and Myles Ioane batted 3 for 4 and homered for Hilo.

Little League 13-14: Host Union City, Calif., scored a run in the ninth inning to defeat 'Aiea, 6-5, yesterday in the opener of the Little League Junior Western Regional. 'Aiea, which led 3-0 after three innings, gave up five runs in the fourth then scored two in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

PONY 13-14: Winning pitcher Waylen Sing Chow had three hits and T.J. Esclito earned a save by striking out all six batters he faced as Mililani defeated El Cajon, Calif., 10-2, yesterday in the PONY Western Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif. Kanalu DeMello had two hits and two RBIs for Mililani, which broke it open with a six-run sixth inning.

Babe Ruth 13-15: El Segundo, Calif., defeated Hawai'i, 11-1, Monday in an elimination game of the Babe Ruth Western Regional at Visalia, Calif. Earlier, Visalia beat Hawai'i, 6-4; and Hawai'i beat San Luis Obispo, Calif., 3-1, and Reno, Nev., 7-0, and Sonoma, Calif., 3-1. John Worthington, Andrew Ontai and Rick Goto were the winning pitchers for Hawai'i.
Cal Ripken 11-12: Jeremy Crivello and Michael Kenui teamed on a two-hitter as Hilo defeated host San Luis Obispo, Calif., 3-0, yesterday at the Cal Ripken Major Pacific Southwest Regionals.
Crivello allowed one hit and struck out seven in five innings. He also hit a two-run double.

ASA 10-Under: Sheridan Mahelona scattered 11 hits and struck out 11 as Kane'ohe Lokahi beat the Fresno Heat, 10-2, yesterday in the Amateur Softball Association National Championship Western Regional at Manteca, Calif. Alena Hookano had three doubles for Kane'ohe, which advances to today's championship game.

QB Club: June Jones, University of Hawai'i head football coach, and assistant Rich Miano are scheduled to speak at tomorrow's noon meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
