Search, rescue ends in arrest

A Kane‘ohe man was arrested early today on an outstanding court warrant shortly after being rescued by firefighters in Manoa Valley. Conrad Reis, 41, was escorted out of the hills above Loulu Street at 2 a.m., said fire department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Police Lt. Mark Ross said officers arrived in the area at 9:20 last night to check on reports from residents that a man was calling for help. Firefighters were called, and Reis was found off the Manoa Trail after a four-hour ground and air search.

Thieves hold up 2 more banks

A rash of recent O‘ahu bank robberies continued as two holdups Friday increased the total for the year to 24, including eight since June 26.

The Friday robberies were 15 minutes apart.

A heavy-set Caucasian man robbed Hawaii National Bank’s airport branch, 540 Lagoon Drive, at 3:30 p.m. while a Polynesian man, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 160 pounds, held up Central Pacific Bank at 94-210 P¨p¨kahi St. in Waipahu at 3:45 p.m. Demand notes were used in both robberies.

Three banks each in Waipahu and Mililani have been robbed since June 26, accounting for two-thirds of the recent holdups. The airport branch robbery Friday and a July 1 robbery near Ala Moana Center account for the other robberies.

Arson fire damages school

A fire last night that damaged a portable classroom at Campbell High School, and a Tuesday fire at the old Waialua Sugar Co. annex building both were intentionally set, fire investigators said.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said damage was estimated at $5,000 to the structure and $250 to its contents in the 9:26 p.m. school fire.

Fire investigators, meanwhile, said a flammable liquid was used in the main hall area to start the Waialua fire.
