Kane'ohe girls win regional softball title

Sheridan Mahelona pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 as Kane'ohe Lokahi defeated the host Manteca (Calif.) Waves, 11-5, yesterday in the championship game of the Amateur Softball Association 10-Under National Championship Western Regionals.

Kayla Sakamoto batted 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs, and Alena Hookano was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs to lead Kane'ohe.

Kane'ohe scored six runs on two Manteca errors in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open.

SURFING

• Bacalso repeats at U.S. Open: Mililani's Kekoa Bacalso won the junior pro division of the U.S. Open of Surfing for the second consecutive year yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Bacalso, a 2003 graduate of Mililani High, beat two other Hawai'i surfers to win the $2,500 first prize.

Bacalso's best two waves received scores of 7.67 and 7.10 for a total of 14.77.

Dustin Cuizon of 'Ewa Beach finished second with 13.3 and won $1,000. Sean Moody of Hale'iwa placed third with 11.83 and won $800.

The junior pro division is open to professionals and amateurs age 21 and younger.

In the men's pro division, world champion Andy Irons from Kaua'i placed third and received $6,000.

Cory Lopez of Florida edged Australian Taj Burrow for the $15,000 first prize.

Results from the contest did not count toward the World Championship Tour ratings, so Irons is still ranked No. 1.

The U.S. Open is considered the largest surfing event in the nation, with more than 600 competitors and thousands of spectators.



YOUTH BASEBALL

• Little League 14-16: Kyle Correia doubled home Jesse Yamashita in the top of the ninth inning, lifting Hilo to a 4-3 victory over San Jose yesterday at the Little League Senior Western Regional in Lemoor, Calif.

Myles Ioane pitched a six-hitter and struck out 17 for Hilo, which advanced to tomorrow's championship game.

• PONY 13-14: Orange County, Calif., beat Mililani, 6-4, yesterday in the PONY Pony West Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.

Bryant Moniz batted 3 for 4, and Kevin Curd and T.J. Esclito each had two hits for Mililani (1-1), which plays Mount Terrace, Wash., today in the double-elimination tournament.

SOCCER

• Meeting for Real club: Real Hawai'i Futbol Club will hold an informative meeting Wednesday night at Mililani Uka Cafeteria from 7 to 8:30.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in finding out more about the club, and also for new and present members.

Real, which qualified two teams for the U.S. Youth Far West Regional Soccer Tournament in June, is entering its second year.

• UH adds scrimmage: The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team will scrimmage Santa Clara, the 2001 national champion and 2002 runner-up, on Aug. 21 at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Admission is free.

As a result of the scrimmage, UH will play Cornell in a single match Sept. 20 instead of matches on Sept. 19 and 21.

The Rainbow Wahine start the regular season Aug. 29 against Arizona State in the Ohana Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi Tournament.



GOLF

• Oki wins Big Island title: Douglas Oki made a strong charge on the back nine, then defeated Ryan Masuda in a sudden-death playoff yesterday to capture the 80th Big Island Amateur Tournament at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.

Oki, who fell seven strokes off the pace at the turn, finished at even-par 72 to catch second-round leader Masuda (77) at 226.

Oki then parred the first hole of the playoff — the 17th — to win the tournament.

James Giel finished third with 77—227.
