Former University of Hawai'i basketball standout Predrag Savovic was waived by the Denver Nuggets yesterday.
Savovic, a 6-foot-6 guard from Yugoslavia, had an injury-plagued rookie year with the Nuggets last season. In between four stints on the injured list, he played in 27 games, averaging 3.1 points and 0.9 rebounds in 9.5 minutes per game.
"It's disappointing, naturally," said Marc Cornstein, Savovic's New York-based agent. "But this is not the end of a career. Savo will play professional basketball somewhere this season."
Savovic is now considered an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any NBA team. Cornstein said he will also negotiate with several European teams.
"It just happened (yesterday) so we're still kind of figuring out where to go from here," Cornstein said. "Europe is an option along with the NBA, so we're going to have to move fast. We're going to explore all the options and choose the best one for (Savovic)."
The Nuggets have already signed free agent point guard Andre Miller, and were negotiating with other free agent guards.
"I think the Nuggets wanted to keep roster space open and there was just not enough room for Savo," Cornstein said. "But they said they appreciated the one year of service he gave them, and he certainly was happy to have made it through his rookie season with the Nuggets."
Savovic signed a free agent contract with the Nuggets last year after going undrafted in the 2002 NBA Draft.
Savovic holds the UH career record of 178 3-pointers, and is the No. 4 all-time scorer in UH history with 1,414 points.
