Suspects in raid await charges

Charges were pending against two men arrested yesterday in connection with a raid the night of July 30 on a suspected Young Street gambling house by a rival group.

During the incident, two doormen were beaten with aluminum baseball bats.

The two suspects — men 29 and 33 from Waikele and NÅnÅkuli, respectively, were with a group of 20 men who forced their way into a gambling room about 11:30 p.m., police said. The two doormen, 40 and 42, were treated for injuries that included broken bones, police said.

The raiding group ransacked the room, damaging gambling equipment and furniture, but nothing was stolen, police said.

Career Criminal Unit investigators booked the 33-year-old yesterday on suspicion of second-degree assault after he was identified in a photo lineup by one of the injured men. The second suspect was arrested last night on Pohukaina Street and booked on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault.

Man suspected of sword threat

Police arrested a 20-year-old man last night on suspicion of threatening a group of teenagers with a sword and cutting one of them. The confrontation occurred at 8:10 p.m. on Kunawai Lane in Nu‘uanu.

Police said a 17-year-old boy was cut on his arm by the sword. The group chased the man down and allegedly attacked him.

The man was treated for injuries and booked on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree terroristic threatening.

Police search for bank robber

Police were seeking information about a man responsible for two bank robberies in Waipahu. The robber is about 5 feet 11, weighs 200 pounds and has a mustache. CrimeStoppers yesterday released a photo of the suspect taken on Friday when he robbed Central Pacific Bank’s Waipahu branch at 94-210 P¨p¨kahi St. The man also is a suspect in the July 24 robbery of Bank of Hawaii’s Waipahu branch.

Autopsy done on Halawa inmate

An autopsy was performed today on a 42-year-old inmate who was found hanging yesterday in his cell at the Halawa Correctional Facility. A corrections officer discovered the body at 8 a.m.
