Wie shoots 67, advances to match play

Honolulu’s Michelle Wie shot a 4-under 67 — tied for the best round of the day — to place second today and qualify for match play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur.Wie’s two-round total of 2-under 140 on the 6,368-yard Philadelphia Country Club course in Gladwyne, Pa., put her second overall. Korea’s Aree Song shot 67 for a 138 total to take medalist honors.
Wailuku’s Shayna Miyajima also qualified for the 64-player match-play field after shooting tying for 43rd place with a 75—151 total.
Kailua’s Bridget Dwyer shot 79—154 and finished tied for 70th. Makawao’s Lisa Kajihara shot 78—157 and finished tied for 98th.
Heavy rains or lightning suspended play Monday and Tuesday, forcing the completion of the second round until today and pushing match-play competition to tomorrow.
Two rounds of match play will be held tomorrow and Friday. The semifinals will be held Saturday and the final Sunday.
Wie had six birdies and two bogeys today, shooting 33 on the front and 34 on the back.
The Women’s Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the U.S. Golf Association, with 10 strictly for amateurs.
Wie, 13, became the youngest golfer to win a USGA title for adults when she captured the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in June.
