THE LEFT LANE
LeAnn Rimes plans another Honolulu gig

Advertiser Staff and News Services

She's a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll, and oddly enough, just a little bit fond of da club, as well. LeAnn Rimes is planning a return trip to Honolulu on Nov. 1 for a Blaisdell Arena show. The official lowdown on first-day ticket sales and prices is expected soon from promoter Jack Utsick Presents.

Rimes' last Blaisdell visit was in February 2000. The singer is now touring behind her 2002 CD, "Twisted Angel," which launched the second (and more heavily-played) pop radio go-round of her 2000 hit "Can't Fight The Moonlight." Remixes of the song climbed as high as no. 3 on Billboard's dance music sales chart last year.

Jewelry with style

Some unfortunate souls might recall the feeling of showing up at the the senior prom with the same dress as the girl in your chem class.

Avoiding clichés like the plague? To the rescue: The Designer Trunk show. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday through Monday at The Gallery and Gardens LLC, Gillian van Royen will open up all of her one-of-a-kind jewelry designs. Normally, this exclusive jewelry is sold only on the Web.

What's more, van Royen will be available during the show as a fashion consultant.

Admission is free. Call 239-8146.

A taste of China

It's in keeping with guitarist Gary Lucas' restless m.o. that after working extensively with the inimitable Captain Beefheart — the music world's creative, blissed-out equivalent of a Cuisinart — Lucas moved on to explore pre-World War II Chinese pop from regionally iconic vocalists Bai Kwong and Chow Hsuan.

Earlier this year, Lucas released "The Edge Of Heaven," a well-received CD of American-influenced jazz, blues and swing straight out of Shanghai. Lucas — who in his 30-plus year career has played with Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Jeff Buckley — performs the music on solo acoustic guitar Friday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $20 ($15 for seniors, students, UH faculty and staff, and Academy members). For tickets, call UH Outreach College at 956-6878.

'Dragonfly' plays on

"On Dragonfly Wings," the Lisa Matsumoto-Roslyn musical fantasy inspired by the late Alana Dung, has been extended for five more performances this week at Hawai'i Theatre. It features Chrissy Naruo as Wendy Waterbug, Mary Gutzi as Dora Dragonfly and Lisa Matsumoto as the Queen Bee.

The show goes on at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday, and at 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $15 to $40. Call 528-0506.
