Maui hospital fund-raiser Saturday

Advertiser Staff

KA'ANAPALI, Maui — A fund-raising event Saturday will celebrate the signing of a land donation agreement conveying 15 acres for development of an acute-care hospital in West Maui.

The Ka'anapali Development Corp. gave the land to the nonprofit West Maui Improvement Foundation Inc., which has been spearheading the community effort to bring a hospital to the west side of the island within three to five years.

The hospital is to be part of the 1,154-acre Ka'anapali 2020 development, which also would include 2,800 residential units, a golf course, parks, a school and commercial space.

The foundation hopes to find a private operator for the hospital.

The island's only acute-care facility with an emergency room is Maui Memorial Medical Center, at least 25 miles away in Wailuku.

Saturday's celebration, at the Royal Lahaina Resort, will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include a dinner buffet, entertainment, and silent and live auctions. A $25 donation is requested.
