HONOLULU

HECO replaces transformer

Hawaiian Electric Co. yesterday replaced a transformer at its Pi'ikoi Street substation suspected in two power failures on Monday that affected customers in the Makiki area, said HECO spokesman Jose Dizon.

The first outage at 12:04 p.m. lasted 25 minutes and affected 6,600 customers. Power also was lost at 6:02 p.m. for 41 minutes, affecting 3,800 customers.

Volunteers help restore trails

Makiki Valley trails are changing thanks to the state and a group of volunteers who spend one Saturday a month building bridges, restoring native forests and maintaining one of O'ahu's most popular forest trails.

Volunteers are needed for the next Division of Forestry and Wildlife's O'ahu Na Ala Hele Trails and Access program work day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23. Volunteers will meet at the forestry and wildlife base yard.

To get there take Makiki Street to Makiki Heights Drive and enter the Makiki Forest Recreation area just before the first hairpin turn on Makiki Heights Drive. For more information, call 973-9782.

Banquet honors Hawai'i senators

U.S. Sens. Dan Inouye and Daniel Akaka, D-Hawai'i, will be honored at the Organization of Chinese Americans gala awards banquet at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Sheraton Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom. Inouye and Akaka will receive the association's Outstanding Citizens Achievement Award at the conclusion of the organization's annual convention and 30th anniversary celebration, which runs tomorrow through Sunday.

The OCA Spirit of America Award will be presented to Gen. Eric Shinseki, who recently retired as the Army's chief of staff, and the organization plans a special tribute to the late U.S. Rep. Hospital wants no-parking area

Castle Medical Center wants the city to install no-parking signs on portions of Ulukahiki and Manu Aloha streets to eliminate congestion around the entrances to the parking lot and maintain a clear road for ambulances. The issue will be discussed at the Kailua Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Kailua District Park multipurpose room.

Bombings to be remembered

WAILUKU, Maui — A community peace observance will be held tonight to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan during World War II. The interfaith event will begin at 7 p.m. at '?ao Congregational Church in Wailuku. There will be Hawaiian chant, dramatic readings, music and prayers.
