Lynch wins Aloha Section PGA title in sudden death

John Lynch parred the 18th hole in sudden death to win the Aloha Section PGA Club Professional Championship, yesterday at The Club at Hokuli'a on the Big Island.

Lynch, a pro at Aloha Academy of Golf at Ko'olau, shot 2-under-par 70 in the final round. He finished regulation tied with Oahu Country Club head pro Andrew Feldmann (72) at 146.

Casey Paulson, head professional at Kukio Golf & Beach on the Big Island, was third at 74—147. Kevin Hayashi, of Mauna Kea Resort, was fourth at 75—148.

The low seven scorers represent Hawai'i in the Western Regional CPC at the Indian Summer Golf & Country Club in Olympia, Wash., Oct. 16-19.

The top 30 finishers at the Western Regional advance to the 2004 PGA Club Professional Championship.

Kono, Ting tied: Jennie K. champion Stephanie Kono and Maui's Desiree Ting are tied for first after yesterday's opening round of the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship.

Kono and Ting both shot even-par 72 at Mid-Pacific Country Club. Kathy Tsukada is two shots back and Ayaka Kaneko three back. Defending champion Rachel Kyono shot 77.

Kono, a Punahou eighth-grader, beat Ting in the 2001 HSWGA Match Play Championship final.

McLachlin four back: Honolulu's Parker McLachlin shot an even-par 70 in the opening round of the 37th annual Pacific Coast Amateur Championship. It is being played at Capilano Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, B.C.

Californian Elliott Wainwright leads the 72-hole tournament after opening with a 66. McLachlin is tied for 18th in a field of 90.

Mercedes Championships tickets on sale: Tickets are on sale for the 2004 Mercedes Championships, Jan. 5-11 at Kapalua's Plantation Course.

The PGA Tour's season-opening event brings together the 2003 winners.

Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Jim Furyk — who have all won previously at Kapalua — are among those who have qualified.

A season pass is good for the two practice rounds (Jan. 5-6), Pro-Am (Jan. 7) and all four tournament days (Jan. 8-11).

The cost is $50 until Dec. 22. Individual event tickets are also available. Children 16-under are free when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult.
