THE LEFT LANE
Don't let your hot dog sizzle under the sun

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Dogs are people, too. Er, well, they at least need to be taken care of when headed to the beach, in much the same way you protect your own skin.

The Hawaiian Humane Society advises against walking dogs when the sun's rays are strongest, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and veterinarians suggest rubbing sunscreen onto ears and noses when the animals do venture into the sun. Another option: high-tech pet sungoggles, as seen above.

Carry a water bottle or stop at fountains to hydrate pets, and avoid giving them short haircuts — contrary to conventional wisdom, their fur actually can insulate them, keeping cool air on the skin's surface.

Tech camp just for disabled kids

Here's a cool idea: Camp Cool is a technology day camp for kids 8 to 13 who are disabled.

The day camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and Aug. 16; $5 fee covers lunch and a T-shirt. Information: 532-7110. Kids can choose to work with video, digital photography, computer-based applications, or Web site development. The technology used will be tailored to the camper's abilities and interests.

Moms of pro basketballers will put on a show

What do basketball, the Girl Scouts and fashion have in common?

The Mothers of Professional Basketball Players present Halftime Hula Hoopla, a benefit for the Girls Scouts of Hawai'i, 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Hawai'i Convention Center's Kalakaua Ballroom.

The event will feature a fashion show with the moms modeling autographed basketball jerseys signed by their famous sons and daughters, local entertainment and prize give-aways.

Tickets are $10 and available at the door. For details: 595-8400.

Elsa Peretti designs on display at Tiffany

For 25 years, Elsa Peretti has been designing inspired jewelry for Tiffany & Co. Today through Sept. 2, the Tiffany store at 2100 Kalakaua Ave. will honor the anniversary by featuring "Unique Visions," an extensive collection of Peretti's work.

Her stylized interpretations of natural forms are presented in fluid, seamless shapes.

In addition to jewelry, Peretti designs bags and other accessories, including the gold-mesh halter pictured above, fashioned from 18-karat gold and selling for $12,000.

The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. 926-2600.
