Bank of Hawaii gives $10,000

Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Kona Hospital Foundation's "Campaign For Renewal." The money will be used for a radiation therapy unit, a new imaging center in the nuclear medicine department and the renovation of the emergency room to include triage.



EPA grant to restore wetland

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded a $75,000 grant to the Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources for wetland restoration and monitoring work at Hamakua Marsh in Kailua.

The Hamakua Wetland Restoration and Monitoring Program will: use the money for work at the Hamakua State Wildlife Sanctuary to re-establish habitats for native Hawaiian waterbirds and migratory shorebirds; involve the local community in caring for the wetlands; develop monitoring techniques to understand the biological health of coastal Hawaiian wetlands; and establish a native wetland ecosystem.

The program will also work to network volunteer organizations, students and the scientific community in sharing information on wetlands restoration and management.

Wetland areas are valuable in cleaning the water that recharges groundwater supplies, reducing flood risks and providing habitats for fish and other wildlife.



Salvation Army gets $8,000

The Salvation Army recently received an $8,000 grant from the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i to help expand its Hana Pono'i program, which teaches self-sufficiency skills to people needing financial and food assistance. The program conducts three-hour life skills training workshops focusing on basic financial resource management, enhanced food security and improved health.



$26,000 raised for cancer aid

Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation's annual golf tournament generated $26,000. It provides financial assistance for Hawai'i families who have a child undergoing cancer treatment. Sponsors of the tournament, which was held at Mililani Golf Course, included Bert Kobayashi of Kobayashi Development Group; City Bank; Galiher DeRobertis Nakamura Ono Takitani; HMAA; Kaiser Permanente; Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children; Ken's Auto Fender; McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon LLP; Mitsunaga & Associates; Ron's Construction; Controlpoint Surveying; HGEA; Hawaii Receivables Management LLC; Monarch Insurance; Okamura Appraisals; Robert Wilkinson, M.D.; John Lederer, M.D.; Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; Pharmacare; Deloitte & Touche; Peter Avignone; Gentry Homes and Schuler Homes.

The foundation also received $10,000 from the Friends of Hawaii Charities through the Sony Open 2003.

The foundation strives to provide and promote state-of-the-art health care for patients and survivors.



$20,000 grant for job program

The Winners At Work Foundation has received a $20,000 grant from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to help provide job training and placement services for people with disabilities and barriers to employment in Hawai'i. Winners at Work reaches 1,400 participants and employers throughout Hawai'i.
