Advertiser Staff

Todd Rego, Clayton Gomi and Brandan Kop, the past three champions, are entered in the Army Invitational this weekend. The event returns after a one-year break because of Kalakaua renovations.

The tournament will be played tomorrow and Saturday at Kalakaua and Leilehua. The field will be cut to approximately 120 players after the second round. The final round will be played only at Leilehua, with an awards ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m.

There are five flights in the event, including Senior (50-older).

Along with the three latest winners, the field includes former Manoa Cup champions Randy Shibuya and Guy Yamamoto. Reigning state amateur stroke play champion Chase Chulakote also is entered, as are Norman-Ganin Asao, Del-Marc Fujita, Kellan Anderson and Joe Phengsavath.

Na Koa 'Aina entries still open

Entries are still open for the 2003 Na Koa 'Aina tournament that helps soldiers celebrate Christmas while they are away from home.

Last year the event provided Christmas dinner for more the 1,300 families.

The tournament will be Aug. 22, at 8:30 a.m., at Leilehua. It is open to military ($105), Department of Defense employees ($115) and civilians ($125).

The event is 27 holes and will feature a nine-hole "tournament within a tournament."

It starts with the new AIG Hawai'i Shootout, a nine-hole alternate-shot competition. The regular tournament follows and is a three-person scramble and best-ball format.
