Islanders' Arceneaux willing to lay it on line

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

DARNELL ARCENEAUX

Darnell Arceneaux's playing career is nearing an end and he's doing whatever it takes to extend it — even if it means putting his body in harm's way.

The Hawaiian Islanders quarterback has announced this will be his final arenafootball2 season after being hired as Saint Louis School head football coach in late June.

Arceneaux, 25, will start tomorrow when the Islanders (11-6) play the Tulsa Talons (13-3) at the Tulsa Convention Center in the National Conference semifinals. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. (HST).

"I told the guys I'm going out to play to get hurt; that's how hard I want to play," Arceneaux said. "You've got to play to the point where you're putting your body and health on the line. That's the only way you're going to get it done."

The Islanders are coming off a 57-30 victory over the visiting Wichita Stealth last Friday in their first-ever playoff game. It was the most lop-sided win in the Islanders' two-year history.

Arceneaux was named af2 offensive player of the week after accounting for all eight Islanders' touchdowns against Wichita. He completed 16 of 25 passes for 229 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for two scores.

"I was really happy with the way he performed — his statistics, completion ratio, six touchdown passes," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said. "Any coach would be happy with that performance."

It was likely the Islanders' final home game of the season.

"It was an emotional time, not having my little boy here to watch my last game... My last game in front of my mom and my family and the local people," Arceneaux said. "It fired me up even more, the emotion and adrenaline."

The Islanders could play at the Blaisdell next week if they beat Tulsa and the Arkansas Twisters (10-7) upset the Quad City Steamwheelers (14-2), who have won 14 straight.

Tulsa's last home game was July 12 when it scored 13 points over the final 4:16 to top the Islanders, 48-47. It was the Talons' 26th consecutive regular-season home victory.

"We want to go up, represent the Islanders, represent the state and play a good football game," Lee said. "If we play well, we'll come out victorious and end the streak."

Arceneaux has started 11 games this season, completing 159 of 309 passes for 2,247 yards and 41 touchdowns. He was placed on the long-term injured list midway through the season after suffering a broken bone in his throwing hand.

Notes: Tulsa leads the all-time series with the Islanders, 3-0. ... Tulsa won both meetings last season by a combined 53 points. ... The Islanders are 4-4 on the road this season.
