Pearl City in regional semifinal today

Bryson Namba hit a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to give Pearl City the cushion it would need to beat Montana, 4-3, yesterday in the final game of pool play at the Little League Majors (ages 11-12) Northwest Regional Tournament at San Bernardino, Calif.

Montana countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Namba escaped further trouble to finish the five-hitter. He struck out 10 and walked two.

Pearl City (4-0) received the top seed in the championship bracket and will face Idaho (1-3) today in a semifinal game.

Mililani Broncos fall: Despite a three-hit, nine-strikeout performance by Christopher Pascual, Mililani lost to Puerto Rico, 3-0, yesterday in the PONY Bronco (ages 11-12) World Series in Monterey, Calif.

Pascual had a no-hitter through four innings, but allowed a run in the fifth and a two-run homer in the sixth.

GOLF

Masuda leads Army by one: Ryan Masuda shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the U.S. Army Invitational at the Leilehua Golf Course.

Pomaikai Shishido and Spencer Shishido are one shot back at 70.

The second round in all flights continue today at the Leilehua and Kalakaua courses.

TENNIS

Pampulov to assist HPU: Former Hawai'i Pacific tennis player Stefan Pampulov has been named assistant coach for the men's and women's teams, HPU athletic director Russell Dung announced.

Pampulov compiled a record of 58-12 in singles and 53-22 in doubles since joining the Sea Warriors in 1999. He helped his team to four consecutive NCAA II National Championship appearances, where it finished as runners-up three times.

Pampulov was a three-time Pacific West Conference All-Academic selection, two-time PacWest All-Conference selection and an ITA/NCAA Scholar Athlete. He will assist head coach Henry Somerville.
