Cast your vote in these Hawai'i book awards

The Hawaii Book Publishers Association is inviting readers to register to vote for the organization's 2003 Ka Palapala Po'okela (Excellence in Books) Awards. Any interested person can become a member of the voting academy by registering and then requesting a ballot. The nominated books are widely available in bookstores and libraries but full sets of the books can be viewed at the Hawai'i State Library on King Street at the main reference desk and also at the Maui Community College Library, Hilo Public Library and Lihue Public Library. Displays will also be featured at Barnes & Noble in Kahala, Borders Books & Music at Ward Centre, Waldenbooks at Windward Mall and Waldenbooks at Ka'ahumanu Center on Maui.

The judging period is from Aug. 8 to Sept. 19; ballots must be returned no later than Sept. 19. Awards will be announced Oct. 17.

Below are the nominees. In addition to the awards listed, one nominee will be selected for the Samuel M. Kamakau Award for Book of the Year; all nominees are eligible except for those in the Aloha From Beyond Hawai'i category.

GENERAL CATAGORIES (vote for one book)

Excellence in Children's Hawaiian Culture. Books for young readers reflecting Hawaiian culture or Hawaiian history: "Hawaiian Legends of the Guardian Spirits" by Caren Loebel-Fried; "Ho'omalamama: A Hawaiian Language Primer" by Kimo Armitage and Keli'i Ki'ilehua, illustrated by Michael Furuya; "Pele and the Rivers of Fire" by Michael Nordenstrom.

Excellence in Children's Illustrative or Photographic Books. Books for children where illustrations or photographs are the essence of the presentation (including coloring books): "Fables From the Deep" by Leslie Ann Hayashi, illustrated by Kathleen Wong Bishop; "Ten Days in Hawai'i" by Dr. Carolan, illustrated by Joanna F. Carolan.

Excellence in Children's Books, fiction or nonfiction. All other books written for young readers: "Lullaby Moon" by Elaine Masters, illustrated by Tammy Yee, music and lyrics by Malia; "The Tale of Rabbit Island" by Patrick Ching.

Excellence in Literature. Books of fiction (novels), essays, stories, or poetry: "Avebade Bade: Hawai'i's Pidgin Poetry" by Jozuf "Bradajo" Hadley; "In Good Company" by Cedric Yamanaka; "Island Fire: An Anthology of Literature From Hawai'i," edited by Cheryl A. Harstad and James A.
