Punahou's Sakamoto qualifies for Olympic Trials

Punahou senior Noa Sakamoto qualified for next year's Olympic Trials in two swimming events during the past three days at the U.S. championships at College Park, Md.

Recent Iolani graduate Hongzhe Sun re-qualified in the 100 backstroke, and Kaiser alum Ashley Swart missed qualifying in the 200 breaststroke by less than a second.

Sakamoto, in his first senior national championship meet, qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 200-meter freestyle with a personal-best of 1 minute, 52.39 seconds.  He also re-qualified in the 400 freestyle in a personal-best 3:55.42.

Sun re-qualified in the 100 backstroke in 57.54 seconds.

Swart's personal-best of 2:36.92 in the 200 breaststroke was 93/100ths of a second off the qualifying mark.

GOLF

Hawai'i in sixth place: The Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association team of Cory French, Sean Ogawa, Chris Caycayon and Kellen Watabu, all from Kaua'i, are in sixth place after the first round of the Eddie Hogan Memorial Cup at the Riverside Country Club in Portland, Ore.

Ten western teams, including British Columbia, are competing in the two-day tournament. Host Oregon has a six-stroke lead after a 210, followed by Washigton (216), Southern California (217) and Utah (219). Hawai'i combined for 229. No individual scores were reported.

Selection for the Hogan Cup team is based on HSJGA's Player of the Year point totals. The Hawai'i players are 15 to 17 years old.



SOFTBALL

• Mililani wins opener: Nona Pauline's single in the bottom of the fourth scored Keiki Carlos to give the Mililani All-Stars a 3-2 victory over Hartwell (Calif.) on the first day of the Bobby Sox Nationals (9-and-under) at Buena Park, Calif.

Carlos, who pitched a four-inning complete game, hit a triple in the fourth to tie the game at two.

The double-elimination tournament continues today and tomorrow.
