Big Island wreck victim identified

Big Island police yesterday identified a man who died Saturday in a traffic accident in South Kona as David Frazier, 35, of Captain Cook.

Police said Frazier was heading west on Napo'opo'o Road shortly after midnight Saturday when he lost control of his car and overturned.

He was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. at Kona Hospital. An investigation is continuing.



WINDWARD

Puerto Rican celebration set

Puerto Ricans will celebrate their culture with music, dance and food from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 23 at Windward Mall in Kane'ohe.

Products, crafts and a cookbook will be available, along with entertainment from salsa band Son Caribe and traditional music by Latin Amigos.

The event is sponsored by the mall, the Hispanic Center of Hawaii, the United Puerto Rican Association of Hawai'i and Salsa In Paradise.



Grants available from foundation

Applications are being accepted for $5,000 grants from the Ho'opono Ko'olau Loa Community Foundation.

The foundation targets areas such as community organization and development, education, youth business/ economic development, and health.

Application packages can be obtained at Sunset Beach Elementary, all Kahuku public schools, La'ie Elementary, Hau'ula Elementary, Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center, Kahuku Public and School Library and the Queen Emma Foundation.

Application deadline is Sept. 19.



Calima, Beamer to perform

World music and a Hawaiian slack-key guitar master will be featured at Windward Community College this month as Calima: World Music Trio and Keola Beamer perform at Paliku Theatre.

Calima will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $20 for general, $18 for seniors and military, and $15 for students and may be purchased at the WCC Office of Continuing Education, by calling 235-7433 or at www.eTicketHawaii.com.

HONOLULU

Roadwork slated on Nimitz

The Department of Transportation advises bicyclists and pedestrians that the bike route and sidewalk along Nimitz Highway in the diamondhead direction between Maunakea and Queen streets is closed until further notice for reconstruction work.

Also, motorists are advised of nighttime lane closures on Nimitz between Sumner and Queen streets tonight through Thursday for water line and railing work.

During this time, two lanes of traffic will be closed in either direction from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
