Seven receive scholarships

Discover Card has awarded Tribute Award Scholarships ($2,500) to seven juniors in Hawai'i high schools:

Natalie K. Kamauoha, Kahuku High School; Kristin N. Kitaoka and Jacquelyn F. Koga, Konawaena High School; Joelle Y. Penisten, Waiakea High School; Clairesse M. Brogoitti, Seabury Hall; Jonathan-James T. Eno, Baldwin High School; and Luteru E. Afualo, Kapolei High School.

This year, 8,000 students nationwide competed for scholarships in the Discover Card program. Winners from Hawai'i will go on to compete for nine $25,000 scholarships.



Teacher wins fellowship

Rachel H. Lau, a teacher at Punahou School, has received a James Madison Fellowship. The fellowship supports the advanced study of American history by teachers of American history, government and social studies in the nation's secondary schools.



Tony Group awards seniors

Tony Group awarded $500 scholarships to graduating seniors who have displayed academic and extracurricular excellence in Hawai'i. Winners include: Kelly Tokuhama of 'Aiea High School; Kristyn Funasaki of Pearl City High School; Garrett Wong of Waipahu High School; Julie Barshaw of Campbell High School; Mallory Iha of Mililani High School; Abigail Aceret of Waialua High School; Jasmine Narca of Leilehua High School; Jason Estell of Nanakuli High School; and Ashley Visoria of Wai'anae High School.



Educator recognized

Donna Yamamoto of Moanalua High School has been named a 2003 Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. She is one of 252 educators nationwide being honored. Yamamoto has received a crystal Coca-Cola bottle and a plaque inscribed with a dedication written by Jane Chung, a 2003 Coca-Cola Scholar and senior from Moanalua High School.



Harvard senior awarded

Honolulu resident Bradford Lee, a senior at Harvard University, was awarded the Morris K. Udall Scholarship, a one-year scholarship that covers tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $5,000.
