An elderly man was killed this morning when he was struck by a Chevy Blazer while running across North King Street near Farrington High School to catch a bus.

According to police, the Blazer’s driver was attempting to overtake a westbound city bus that had stopped at a bus stop when he hit the man about 7:15 a.m. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, police said.

The man, who is in his 80s, was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

The motorist, a 48-year-old Punchbowl man, was arrested at the Kalihi police station on five outstanding traffic warrants unrelated to today’s accident.

North King Street between Houghtailing and Kalihi streets was closed to traffic for nearly two hours because of a police investigation of the accident.
