BYUH unanimous pick to win PacWest volleyball

Brigham Young-Hawai'i, the defending Pacific West Conference and NCAA Division II women's volleyball champion, was unanimously selected to repeat as conference champion in a coaches' poll released yesterday.

BYUH received five first-place votes, earning the maximum 50 points. The six head coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Hawai'i Pacific was picked to finish second with 42 points followed by Chaminade (32), Western New Mexico (28), Hawai'i-Hilo (18) and Montana State-Billings (10).

The Seasiders won their second NCAA title and 10th overall national championship last season. After starting the season unranked, BYUH finished 27-2 overall and 9-1 in the PacWest.

The Seasiders will return five of their six starters, including first-team All-Americans Yu Chuan Weng and Chun Yi Lin. BYUH lost defensive specialist and outside hitter Leiau Meatoga who completed her eligibility last season.

BYUH opens its season on Aug. 29 at the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino, Calif.


GOLF

Mullen wins playoff: Jerry Mullen birdied the second playoff hole to defeat Lance Suzuki and Regan Lee for the Hawai'i Golf Players' Club Tournament title at Mililani Golf Club yesterday.

Mullen, an assistant pro at Oahu Country Club, Suzuki and Lee shot 3-under 69s to force the playoff.

John Lynch and Brady Yokooji tied for fourth at 72.

Mullen and Suzuki won the best-ball competition, shooting 9-under 63.

Hawai'i 11th: Hawai'i's four-member team shot a 242 on Sunday for a two-day 471 and finished 11th out of 12 teams in the 35th Eddie Hogan Memorial Cup at the Riverside Country Club in Portland, Ore.

Host Oregon held on to its first-round lead to win by four strokes over Southern and Northern California, both at 439. Oregon's Dustin Andres finished at 2-under par to win the individual title.

Cory French of Kaua'i shot 153 to lead Hawai'i.


RIFLERY

Sze fourth:Sacred Hearts High senior Krystle Sze took fourth last Saturday in the American Legion Junior Air Rifle National Championships Sporter Division at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Sze represented the Crusader Rifle and Pistol Club, coached by Zig Look of Honolulu.
