Macs pitch 'Stitch!'

Disney's "Stitch! The Movie," the sequel to the "Lilo & Stitch" feature, will hit the stores Aug. 26 in DVD and video versions. There will be a sweet accompaniment to the straight-to-DVD/video release: a tiny box of Hawaiian Host chocolate-covered macadamia nuts (already in stores on its own).

"Stitch!" follows the lovable alien, formally called Experiment 626, and his extended 'ohana in Hawai'i. The chocolates are part of a continuing marketing 'ohana between island businesses and Disney.

The two-ounce box has four chocolates; it's about $2 at Daiei, Longs Drugs, ABC Stores and Hilo Hattie.

Lords of the boards

"The Shapemakers," a documentary by Paul Kraus on well-known surfboard shapers, will be previewed at 7:15 p.m. Friday at the Art House at Restaurant Row. The director will attend and field questions after the screening.

Several island surfboard shapers have been invited to the preview, including Randy Rarick, Pat Rawson, Barry Kaniapuni, Ben Aipa and George Downing. A cocktail reception, open to the public, will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ocean Club.

"The Shapemakers" will show Aug. 22-28 at the Art House. It is the second surf-related film in as many weeks to play at the theater; "Step Into Liquid," a film by Dana Brown, has become a quick hit, particularly among surfing buffs, since its premiere last week.

Suck-'em-up sweets

Sip, chew and have your candy, too. 7-Eleven has come out with an edible Slurpee straw, turning a profit on what kids have been doing for years with Red Vine licorice. The edible straws look like red licorice and come in two flavors, sour strawberry and blue raspberry. At 49 cents each, 7-Eleven reports, the straws outsell all other non-chocolate candies there.

A spokesperson for the Hawai'i 7-Eleven stores says the blue raspberry straws are due any day, but that they've nearly run out of the sour strawberry flavor, which came out in March.
