BYUH ranked No. 1 in national volleyball poll

Defending NCAA Division II women's volleyball champion Brigham Young-Hawai'i received the No. 1 ranking in a preseason coaches' poll released yesterday.

The Seasiders earned 34 out of 35 first-place votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Seasiders won their second NCAA title and 10th overall national championship last season.

Tampa (Fla.) was ranked No. 2, followed by Cal State-San Bernardino, Truman State (Mo.) and Minnesota-Duluth. Cal State-San Bernardino received the other first-place vote.

Hawai'i Pacific returned to the poll at No. 22 after falling out of the rankings on Oct. 22, 2002. Chaminade was ranked No. 34.

BASKETBALL

Mango Moon wins: Former University of Hawai'i player Geremy Robinson scored 32 points as Mango Moon beat Electricians Hawai'i, 109-103, last night in the championship game of the NCAA Basketball Summer League at the Manoa Recreation Center.

Justice Sueing scored 25, Llewellyn Smalley 24 and Altrekia Christmas 22 for Mango Moon.

Bobby Nash scored 30 points to lead Electricians Hawai'i. Fabio Ribeiro added 20, Derrick Low 14 and Julian Nakanishi 12.

Sacred Hearts hires Higuchi: Glenn Higuchi has been named varsity head basketball coach at Sacred Hearts Academy.

Higuchi, who replaces Dexter Kaiama, is the head coach for the varsity boys team at ASSETS and has been the JV coach for Sacred Hearts since 2001.

Higuchi also had served as an assistant for St. Francis and previously coached at the Kalaniana'ole Athletic Club, Kaiser's JV girls and Kalani's varsity girls.ÊHe also served as intermediate girls basketball coach at Sacred Hearts in 1985-86.

TENNIS

Lajola 2-0: 'Aiea's Dennis Lajola won his first two matches at the World Junior Tennis Finals without dropping a set.

The tournament, unofficially known as Junior Davis Cup, is a 14-and-under International Tennis Federation team competition with 16 countries. It is being played in Prostejov, Czech Republic.

Lajola and partner Donald Young swept South Africa in their first match, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, they beat Italy, 6-4, 6-1.

Lajola, who will be a freshman at Iolani School, is fifth in the U.S. Tennis Association rankings for Boys 14s. Young, from Chicago, is No. 1.

GOLF

Ishikawa qualifies: David Ishikawa gained a berth in the USGA Senior Amateur Championships after shooting even-par 71 yesterday at a qualifier at the Oahu Country Club.

Wendell Kop (74), Tom Goodbody (75), Paul Bellanca (78) and Roy Nishimoto (79) are alternates.

The USGA Senior Amateur Championships will be held at the Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, Va., Sept. 6-11.
