ML Macadamia narrows loss

Big Island macadamia nut grower ML Macadamia Orchards lost $185,000, or 2 cents per share, in the second quarter of 2003, compared with a loss of $241,000, or 3 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. The company's sales totaled $1.1 million for the quarter, up from $662,000 in second quarter 2002.
The company said the second quarter marks the end of the harvest season and normally accounts for less than 5 percent of the total year's harvest.
Barnwell posts $650,000 profit
Barnwell Industries Inc., a Honolulu-based oil exploration firm, said yesterday it had net earnings of $650,000, or 47 cents per share, in the three months ended June 30, compared with a net loss of $220,000, or 17 cents per share, a year earlier.
Morton Kinzler, chairman and CEO, said earnings increased because of increases in oil and natural gas prices.
Visitor sector grosses $59M
The Activities and Attractions Association of Hawai'i said a survey of about 10 percent of its members showed the responding companies had $58.9 million in gross revenue in the first half of this year. Member companies include helicopter tours, airplane tours, lu'aus, whale watching tours and others.
Jobs service marks 3rd year
O'ahu WorkLinks, a government job placement office, said yesterday it has provided free services to 110,000 job seekers and 4,000 businesses in its three years of operations. The joint county, state and federal project will mark its anniversary with an open house today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1505 Dillingham Blvd.
