Hilo home fire suspicious

Hilo police and fire officials said a suspicious fire heavily damaged a home and destroyed a car yesterday morning. The fire at 61 Halai St. in Hilo was reported at 10:28 a.m. Arriving firefighters reported a car on fire in the garage and flames coming out of the home's first- and second-floor windows. The blaze was brought under control at 10:55 a.m. and extinguished at 11:12 a.m., fire officials said.

Hilo police said the owner of the home had left about 10 a.m. and a neighbor later noticed a white car in flames in the garage. Police said the car did not belong to the homeowner. Damage was estimated at $250,000 to the building and contents.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call detective John Ancheta at 961-2276 or police at 935-3311.
