Music introduction free at library

Musikgarten, a music and movement program designed to introduce young children to the world of music, will be presented at 10:30 a.m. today at the Mililani Public Library, 95-450 Makaimoimo St.

The free event, conducted by Musikgarten Instructor Tara Lucio, will feature storytelling, poetry, singing and instrument playing. Call 627-7470 for more information.


500 to graduate from UH-Manoa

About 500 University of Hawai'i-Manoa graduates and undergraduates are expected to participate in summer commencement exercises at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. There are 699 eligible candidates for degrees, including 48 doctorates, 277 master's degrees, 365 bachelor's degrees and nine post-baccalaureate certificates in secondary education.

Doors to the center will open at 8 a.m. for the combined ceremony. Seating is open. Balloons and strollers are not allowed inside the center.

United Nations University Rector Hans J.A. van Ginkel will address the ceremony.


Two young readers win shopping spree

Hanalei Herring of Pahoa, an incoming ninth-grader at Kamehameha Schools on O'ahu, and Hanakekua Joao of Moloka'i have been named winners of the 2003 Hawaii Pizza Hut and Hawaii State Public Library System Young Adult Summer Reading Shopping Spree Sweepstakes.

Joao, the first-place winner, won a $1,000 shopping spree in the drawing. Herring won a $500 shopping spree.

Both will be flown to Honolulu with a parent, guardian or family member and taken by limousine to Pearlridge Center to shop. A third-place winner of $250 has yet to be named.


Kahuku yard sale taking donations

Friends of the Kahuku Library will conduct its sixth annual yard sale Aug. 30 at Kahuku United Methodist Church, across from the police and fire stations.

The yard sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Clean, usable donations are being accepted at the Kahuku Public and School Library during normal library hours. Proceeds will be used by the library to pay for special programs and purchase library materials, equipment or furniture.
