3 freshmen to join Rainbow Wahine golf team

University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine golf coach Marga Stubblefield will bring in three freshmen recruits, including St. Anthony's graduate Dale Gammie of Pukalani, Maui.

Gammie finished second to Michelle Wie at the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association's Tournament of Champions in December. Wie, 13, was playing in the 15-18 age division. She and Gammie tied for first at 150, and Wie won on a match of cards.

Megan Stoddart, a recruit from Sacramento, was runner-up at last year's Northern California Golf Association Junior Championship.

The third recruit is Sara Odelius, from Helsingborg, Sweden. She is a member of the Swedish National Team and finished second at the Oijared Ladies Open last summer.

New manager at Mid-Pacific: David Sosner is the new general manager at Mid-Pacific Country Club. He previously was vice president of Kapalua Club and Villas and general manager of Kapalua Villas.

Sosner was born in New York and raised in Hawai'i, where he graduated from Punahou.

Emi Chang Espinda has joined the club as member services director. She previously worked as director of sales and marketing at Ko'olau Golf Club and Golf Sales and marketing manager at Waiko-loa Beach Resort.

SHORT PUTTS: Parker McLachlin will be Hawai'i's lone representative at the U.S. Amateur Championship, Aug. 18-24, at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. McLachlin is one of 312 golfers who will be in stroke-play qualifying Monday and Tuesday. The top 64 advance to match play. McLachlin tied for 22nd at last week's Pacific Coast Amateur Championship. ... Christel Tomori's 24th-place finish at last week's Betty Puskar Futures Golf Classic leaves her 64th on the money list, with $4,760 in 13 events. ... Jorge Ortiz of Honolulu and Ian Maclean Of 'Aiea will play in the 20th anniversary DuPont Coolmax World Amateur Handicap Championship, Aug. 25-29 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Players are put into flights according to their handicap. Nearly 100 golfers play in each of the tournament's approximately 50 flights, with the flight winners advancing to compete in the 18-hole world championship playoff.
