Hilo seniors top Canada in Little League World Series

Kulea Bondallian scattered eight hits and batted 2 for 4 as Hilo defeated Alberta, Canada, 8-1, yesterday in the Little League Senior (ages 14-16) World Series at Bangor, Maine.

Bondallian, who struck out six and did not walk a batter, had a five-hit shutout through six innings before allowing a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

Dane Inouye batted 3 for 3, Matt Haasenritter had a pair of run-scoring doubles and Wesley Yada hit a two-run single for Hilo.

Hilo, which is tied for first in its pool with a 2-1 record, completes pool play today against host Orono, Maine (1-2).

Toyama shares lead: Travis Toyama of Kane'ohe shot a 5-under-par 66 to share the lead after the second round of the 35th Annual Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic at Olde York Country Club in Columbus, N.J.

Toyama, the 2002 Manoa Cup champion and University High senior, is tied at 141 with Teddy Collins (72) of Louisville, Ky. Toyama started the day tied for 21st place.

Four women qualify: Bev Kim, Chayne Orscher, Lily Yao and Grace Wilson will represent Hawai'i after qualifying for the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship at the Honolulu Country Club Tuesday.

Kim (79), Orscher (83), Yao (87) and Wilson (88) will compete at the Championship at Barton Creek Resort & Club in Austin, Texas, Sept. 6-11.

Wilson beat Biac Frame in a playoff. Frame (88), Sue Wanlass (90), Kathy Ordway (94) and Betty Nakasone (95) are the alternates.

BOXING

Amateurs take to ring: An amateur boxing show, presented by the USA Boxing Hawai'i Association, is scheduled for Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Pearlside Boxing Club's training site in 'Aiea.

Boxers from O'ahu, Maui and the Big Island will compete in 15 bouts at the site located at the Hawai'i Cheer Company, Harbor Center.

Admission is $7.
