Sounds of slack key to fill bandstand at Kapi'olani

Advertiser Staff

Ernie Cruz Jr. will be featured at Sunday's festival.
Hawaiian slack-key guitar. What sound can evoke more familiar memories of baby lu'au, backyard jams and old Waikiki Shell concerts? And what could be better than a whole day dedicated to the kanikapila of ki ho'alu? The 21st Annual Hawaiian Slack-Key Guitar Festival does just that from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Kapi'olani Park bandstand.

One of the highlights this year is the appearance of master acoustic guitarist Doyle Dykes, who headlines the festival. Also featured will be an array of local stars; see schedule below.

Besides entertainment, there will be Hawaiian crafts, drawings and food booths with favorites such as Hawaiian plates, firecracker sushi, hot dogs, hamburgers, shave ice and drinks.

Admission is free. For details, call 239-4336, 226-2697 or visit hawaiianslackkeyguitarfestivals.com.
