HONOLULU

Alliance for art raises $12,800

The Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education has raised more than $12,800 from the sale of ARTS license plates.

Money raised from the vehicular license plates, which were created by local-based Clarence Lee Design, has been used to provide cash awards for Hawai'i schools with outstanding arts education programs.

Recipients for 2003 include Hanahauoli School, Hanalei School on Kaua'i and Waiahole Elementary School.



Nonprofits invited to apply

Nonprofit organizations interested in putting up displays as part of the city's Honolulu City Lights program are invited to submit applications to the Department of Customer Service.

The deadline is Aug. 29.

Permits will be issued for five display sites during a lottery scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 8. at the City Hall Annex conference room, 550 S. King St. Applicants need not be present to be selected.

Applicants need to be bona fide nonprofit or charitable organizations.

Interested parties should call George Souza, Department of Customer Services, at 523-4381.



WINDWARD

Police will stand watch at Stairs

Police will be on duty at Ha'iku Stairs again this weekend from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to prevent people from hiking the 3,922 steps to the summit of Pu'u Keahiakahoe.

The Windward stairway, which was renovated last year for $875,000, remains closed as the city negotiates to provide parking and an entry to the popular hike.

Boat accident victim dies

A Big Island man injured in an Aug. 3 boating accident died Tuesday at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu.

Tyrone Afong, 22, of Milo-li'i, was helping several other fishermen pull a boat out of the water at the Miloli'i ramp when a cleat broke loose and hit him in the head, police said.



Kaua'i troupes pair up for plays

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Hawai'i Children's Theatre and Kaua'i Community Players will join forces to produce two plays this year, the first of which, "Honk! Honk!," opens today.

"Honk! Honk!," a musical version of the children's story "The Ugly Duckling," runs for two weekends, playing at 7 p.m. today, at 2 and 7 p.m. tomorrow and at 4 p.m. Sunday, at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall.

Tickets are $12 at the door for adults, and $10 for children.

Next weekend's showings are at 7 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at the convention hall.
