Event to honor early Christian

HILO, Hawai'i — The family of Henry 'Opukaha'ia will honor the famous Christian and scholar with a celebration this morning at Kahikolu Church in Napo'opo'o in South Kona.

'Opukaha'ia left Hawai'i in 1808 as a 16-year-old, bound for Connecticut, where he attended Yale. 'Opukaha'ia, who traveled throughout New England seeking support for a mission to Hawai'i, has been credited as Hawai'i's first Christian convert.

He died of typhus at age 26 in 1818, but the story of his life inspired the early missionaries to travel to Hawai'i starting in 1820.

'Opukaha'ia wished to return to Hawai'i, and his family arranged to have his remains sent to Kahikolu Church in 1993. Today's service will mark the 10-year anniversary of that event.

The church's newly renovated sanctuary will be blessed during an 8:30 a.m. service, followed at 9 a.m. by celebrations marking the anniversary of the return of 'Opukaha'ia's remains.

'Opukaha'ia's family will also dedicate a new bronze plaque at his gravesite.
