HFD battling fire above Yokohama

Eleven fire companies were battling a brush fire late last night in the hills above Yokohama Bay on the Leeward Coast.

The fire was reported at 7:47 p.m. and the first fire company on the scene immediately called for assistance because of stiff winds, said HFD Capt. Emmit Kane. He said he did not know how much brush had been scorched, but as of 10:30 last night the fire had not been contained.

Kane said fire crews were expected to fight the blaze late into the night and into this morning.

Woman killed in crash identified

The medical examiner's office identified a 41-year-old woman killed in a car crash last weekend on Kamehameha Highway near Helemano Plantation as Carmen Morales of Waikiki. Morales was found dead Saturday in her car in a ditch off the roadway. An autopsy determined she died of multiple injuries.

Punalu'u artwork moved to Hale'iwa

Charred and damaged artwork salvaged from a fire at Punalu'u Art Galley was taken to Iwa Gallery in Hale'iwa yesterday. Both shops are owned by Scott Bechtol, who was injured in the Thursday afternoon fire that caused about $150,000 damage to the building.

Bechtol was taken to the hospital yesterday, said gallery employee Carol DeMontier, a longtime friend of Bechtol.

Bechtol acquired the Punalu'u gallery in the 1970s, DeMontier said, adding that the shop had just been refurbished. Bechtol was making candles when the fire started, she said.
