Chaminade, UH could meet in Maui cage semis

Advertiser Staff

NCAA Division II Chaminade will try to end a 30-game basketball losing streak in the tournament it hosts against Villanova in the opening round of the 20th Maui Invitational in November.

The other first-round pairings in the event to be held Nov. 24-26 have Ohio State against San Diego State, Santa Clara facing Hawai'i and Central Michigan playing Dayton.

The tournament, sponsored by EA Sports, is played in the 2,400-seat Lahaina Civic Center.

The brackets, announced yesterday, have the Villanova-Chaminade winner playing the Santa Clara-Hawai'i winner in the semifinals.

Chaminade, which pulled off one of college basketball's biggest upsets ever with a victory over No. 1-ranked Virginia and Ralph Sampson on Dec. 23, 1982, has a 3-52 record in the Maui Invitational. The Silverswords' last win was over Stanford in the seventh-place game in 1992.

VOLLEYBALL

UHH to play alumnae: The Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball team will open its season with an alumnae match on Aug. 23 in the UHH gymnasium.

The match will be the debut of head coach Julie Morgan who was hired in May. Morgan replaced Sharon Peterson who announced her retirement in December after coaching the Vulcans for 25 years.

A $1 donation will be accepted at the door as admission.

Alumnae interested in participating are asked to attend a 3 p.m. practice August 17 at the Haili gymnasium or call Lyndell Lindsay at (808) 961-3633.
