Ruth Nortje, of Whitehouse Station, N.J., and Kathy Colin, of Kailua, Hawai'i, each earned gold medals in kayaking at the Pan American Games at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Nortje sprinted to victory in the 500-meter singles race. Ninety minutes later, Nortje and Colin cruised to an easy victory in the K2 women's 500-meter doubles.

"This feels great. I like the color of these medals better," said Colin, who previously won a silver.

Miami's Benjie Lewis and partner Brandon Woods of Kane'ohe, Hawai'i, fell short of winning their second medal in as many days when they finished fifth in the two-man 500-meter kayak event yesterday.

Lewis and Woods, who won a silver medal in the K2 1,000-meter race Friday, finished in 1 minute 36.29 seconds in a race won by the Brazilian team of Carlos Campos and Fabio Demarchi in 1:33.09.
