Bartels finishes fourth in France surf contest

Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels placed fourth in the Nokia Lacanau Pro women's surfing contest yesterday in 2-foot waves at Lacanau, France.

Silvana Lima of Brazil won the contest with a two-wave score of 11.4. Less than two points separated the top four surfers.

Maria Tita Tavares of Brazil was second with 11.36 points, followed by Australian Lynette MacKenzie (11.07) and Bartels (9.94).

Bartels received a score of 6.17 midway through the heat, but never found a solid second wave after that.

Megan Abubo of Waialua was eliminated in the semifinals.

Bartels is still ranked No. 1 on the women's World Qualifying Series.



MORE SURFING

• Perfect 10 for Whitegon: Julie Whitegon of San Diego posted a perfect-10 score en route to the women's division semifinals of the Converse Hawaiian Open at Ala Moana Bowls yesterday.

Whitegon, the defending U.S. Professional Women's Longboard champion, will be joined in today's semifinals by sisters Joy and Kristen Magelssen, Tiare Thomas, Daize Shayne, Jayme Gee and Hawai'i's Desire DeSoto and Amy Lawson.

California's Joel Tudor will be joined by seven Hawai'i surfers in the men's semifinals: Dino Miranda, Bonga Perkins, Rusty Keaulana, Joel Valentin, Kapono Nahina and Kai Sallas.



VOLLEYBALL

• Mira Costa repeats: Mira Costa (Calif.) defeated Newport Harbor (Calif.), 24-26, 25-15, 25-18, to repeat as champions of the Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament yesterday at Iolani School.

Kalani finished third, falling to Newport Harbor, 19-25, 23-25, in semifinal play.

The tournament is named after the Iolani girls' volleyball coach who died June 30 at age 47. She had been suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease.



TENNIS

Lajola helps United States win: Dennis Lajola, an Iolani freshman from 'Aiea, won the decisive doubles match yesterday to help the United States defend its title in the World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic.

The U.S. beat Japan in the final, 2-1. After splitting the singles matches, Lajola and Chicago's Donald Young teamed to win the doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

Lajola, ranked fifth nationally in Boys 14s, won all four of his doubles matches in the event.



WATER POLO

Tournament ends: Two California teams beat Hawaiian Islands teams to win the boys and girls 18-under divisions of the 35th Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament at the University of Hawai'i's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex yesterday.

Stanford defeated Hawaiian Islands A, 3-1, in the girls final, and TRAP of Irvine, Calif., stopped Hawaiian Islands A, 7-6, to win the boys championship.

Other overall division winners were: Female 14—TRAP (Irvine, Calif.); 16—TRAP; Women—Oakland (San Ramon, Calif.); Male—14—Rosebowl (Arcadia, Calif.); 16—Hawaiian Islands A; Men— Olympic Club; Coed 12: Rosebowl (Arcadia, Calif.).

Katie Flanagan won the Leslie Kerfoot Award for the top Hawai'i female player, and Doug Cole and CJ Smith were the Brad Yim Award winners as the best Hawai'i male player.
