PETER E. SHAINDLIN has been named chief operating officer for the Halekulani Corp., owner and manager of Halekulani and Waikiki Parc hotels on O'ahu. He is the first person outside the corporation's parent company, Mitsui Fudosan, and outside Japan to play a leading role in any of the company's businesses. His appointment, effective Sept. 1, comes at the same time as the departure of the corporation's president and chief executive officer, YURI HIGA, who has been with Halekulani since 1981. Higa will return to Tokyo to work with Mitsui Fudosan.
Shaindlin, a 25-year veteran of the hospitality industry, property management and hotel operations, is former founding principal of Lotus Luxury Group, and before that, regional vice president, Caribbean, of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. The changes in management follow the completion of a multimillion dollar refurbishment program at the hotel, and the April opening of Spa-Halekulani. The hotel was just voted among the top five properties in the 2003 Travel+Leisure annual "World's Best Awards Readers' Survey."
Also announced at Halekulani was the promotion of NELSON ARLOS, from guest information and services manager to sales manager.
MELVIN KANESHIGE, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Outrigger Enterprises Inc., and a veteran of the real-estate development legal field, has been named chairman of the Urban Land Institute Hawai'i's District Council. Before joining Outrigger in 1995, Kaneshige was a partner in the law firm of Chun, Kerr, Dodd & Kaneshige, practicing primarily in real-estate development, acquisition, financing, management and disposition. He has also been chairman of the Waikiki Improvement Association and director for the Wailea Community Association. ULI Hawaii works to promote responsible leadership in local land use.

ROBERT BOON, former wholesale manager with Charter Funding of Hawaii/First Magnus Financial Corp., has been named chief operating officer. The Arizona-based company, in Hawai'i since 1998, has eight offices statewide, with a 2002 closing of over $700 million in loans, twice the amount of the previous year.
JAMES HOCKER, previously vice president of a Dayton, Ohio, based information technology provider with a focus on government and defense projects, has been named vice president of a local high-tech company, Referentia Systems Inc. The company specializes in e-learning, advanced computing and systems engineering solutions, with an expanding military and government presence.
Honolulu attorney MARVIN DANG has been named one of nine members and the only one from Hawai'i of the American Bar Association's national Standing Committee of Delivery of Legal Services. The committee works to improve delivery of legal services to people with low to moderate income. Dang, an attorney since 1978, is also chairman of the Hawaii State Bar Association Collection Law Section.
JUDITH STERLING, partner in the law firm of Sterling & Tucker, has become the first person in Hawai'i to be certified in the law field of elder care. Certified elder-law attorneys work on behalf of the elderly in areas such as estate planning, probate and trusts, retirement, disability planning, Social Security and Medicare issues, long-term care insurance, surrogate decision-making and nursing-home issues. Certification is by the American Bar Association-accredited National Elder Law Foundation and the state Supreme Court. Sterling is also a certified public accountant and the second person in the state to be certified as an estate-planning law specialist.
ROY K. AMEMIYA JR., former city director of budget and fiscal services, has been named senior vice president of City Bank. He will oversee the bank's dealer center, consumer loan center, equipment leasing and business services. The 22-year veteran of the local banking industry also has worked for Bank of Hawaii.
TEAM Unlimited, the Honolulu-based marketing company and producer of sports and television events, has named company veteran JANET CLARK as president. She succeeds owner TOM KIELY, who will continue as chief executive officer. Clark has been vice president of marketing since joining the company in 1993. DAVID NICHOLAS, managing director of the XTERRA Global tour and the third member of the executive team, will continue to run the events arm of the company. XTERRA is an event that combines swimming, mountain biking and trail running.
FRANK TESKEY, president and publisher of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, MidWeek and RFD Publications, has been named to the board of directors of the HAWAII FOODBANK.
