Man dies, two others hurt in La'ie crash

A man killed in a Saturday night accident on the North Shore has been identified as 24-year-old Jason Idica of Punalu'u.

Idica died at the scene and two other men were critically injured late Saturday night when their car struck a utility pole on Kamehameha Highway near Malaekahana State Park.

The crash occurred about 10 p.m. when the 19-year-old driver of a Subaru ran off the road and hit the pole near Adams Road between La'ie and Kahuku, Honolulu police said. The driver and a 20-year-old passenger were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation and said alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash.

Police detoured traffic from Kamehameha Highway though the state park while firefighters freed one pinned victim and paramedics tended to the injured.

A transformer blew as the pole went down. A HECO spokesman said about 780 customers were without power in the area until repairs were made.
