Arts foundation member named

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has announced that Gae Bergquist Trommald has been appointed an SFCA commissioner. Trommald, who was appointed by Gov. Linda Lingle, is a senior financial adviser with the Saracco, Hochuli, Bergquist Trommald & Associates Group of Merrill Lynch.

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts was established in 1965 by the Hawai'i State Legislature as the state's official arts agency. The SFCA promotes, perpetuates, preserves, and encourages culture and the arts, history, and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai'i.


Regents honor three UH staffers

Three University of Hawai'i staff members have received awards from the Board of Regents for their contributions to students and the community. The recipients of the 2003 Regents Medal for Excellence in Research are: Andrew Harris, assistant professor at the Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology at UH-Manoa; Laurence N. Kolonel, deputy director of the Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i; and James B. Nation, mathematics professor at UH-Manoa.


Scholarship winners named

The Chinese Women's Club of Honolulu has announced its $1,000 college scholarship winners for 2003-2004. They are: Nicole H. Fujie, majoring in pre-vet medicine and animal science at UH-Hilo; Joanna A.T. Lee, majoring in speech at UH-Manoa; and Krystal Y.G. Lee, majoring in information and computer science at UH-Manoa.


Musicians earn scholarships

The following young musicians received the 2003-2004 Rita Thompson Music Scholarship: Morgan Pajo, 13, and Mitchell Kuga, 16, both piano students of Christine Suehisa; and Allison Yoshida, 14, clarinet student of Paul Sato.

They performed in a scholarship fund-raiser, "Jimmy Borges & Friends," 7 p.m. yesterday at Kilohana United Methodist Church.


Nursing major gets award

Marie Jane Agsalda Pascual, graduate of Moanalua High School, has received a $1,000 scholarship from Papa John's Pizza's national scholarship program. Pascual was a member of the Interact Club, Opera Club, Family Career and Community Leaders of America Club, Symphonic Band and marching band.

She will major in nursing at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles.
