Pouring a few glasses to support good cause

Advertiser Staff and News Services

All the wine you can taste, heavy pupus, and a good cause. Sisters Offering Support (SOS) will host its seventh-annual go-round of "An Evening With Angels" Thursday, a wine-tasting fund-raiser and silent auction with vino selected and provided by Wines By Design.

SOS is a nonprofit organization that raises awareness of, and offers support to, individuals affected by commercial sexual exploitation. In the last four years, its prevention programs have reached more than 11,000 Hawai'i teens.

Tickets for the 5 p.m. benefit at the downtown Honolulu YWCA's Café Laniakea are $100. For more information, call SOS at 941-5554.

French classic gets full-length showing

John Woo fans are gonna love this. The director of "Windtalkers" and "Face/Off" is finally getting a chance to show his most successful flick — "Le Cercle Rouge" — in its entirety at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts. Tickets are $5 general and $3 for members.

The showings, tomorrow through Tuesday, mark the first time the 140-minute classic will be shown in its entirety in the United States. The French flick was introduced in this country in a 40-minute version in the 1990s, though released in 1970. This time, Woo fans can experience his work with the help of subtitles.

If that's not enough French for you, check out "Quai des Orfevres" next week at the Doris Duke Theatre.

Call 532-6768 for more information.

Son shares dad's eye for Hawai'i's beauty

For years, Ric Noyle has photographed the natural beauty — not to mention female beauties — of the Islands. His images have been prominent in everything from ads to national magazine features.

Now his son, soon to begin his senior year at Punahou, is establishing himself as an outstanding photographer as well. Zak Noyle's spectacular surf photos (the kind that make you ask yourself "How did he DO that?") are displayed alongside his father's aerial views of O'ahu at Pictures Plus in Kahala Mall through August.

Look out, guys: The comb's out of the bag

Every once in a while, a major semantic shake-up occurs and a word gets into the dictionary that you kinda wish hadn't. Witness the latest: "comb-over."

Do we really want this to become an official hairstyle?

This innovation designed to cover balding areas on the heads of men has gained new acceptance with the nod from Webster's.

But hey, guys, just because it can be spotted and named doesn't make it an cceptable style statement.
