Fugitive captured during Maui chase

WAILUKU, Maui — Fugitive Elvis Matagi was captured yesterday on Maui following a chase on Kahekili Highway, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Matagi, 39, abandoned the pickup truck he was driving on a dirt road and ran down a rocky cliff to a beach with agents in pursuit. He was taken into custody on a state parole retake warrant.

Matagi was featured in a recent CrimeStoppers bulletin. He has been convicted for 16 felony and 10 misdemeanor offenses.


Wailuku man faces federal ice charges

WAILUKU, Maui — A 32-year-old Wailuku man has been charged in a federal complaint with intent to distribute more than two ounces of crystal methamphetamine.

Keoki A. Astronomo, aka Keokoi Astronomo, was arrested Saturday by agents of the U.S. Marshals Service's Hawai'i Fugitive Task Force at 845 Kelawea St. in Lahaina. According to a complaint filed Monday, Astronomo attracted the attention of agents who had gone to the address on other business because he was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet on his ankle.

Astronomo was asked for identification and while retrieving his Hawai'i driver's license from a fanny pack, agents noticed a large plastic bag containing a crystalline substance and a "butane torch" lighter commonly used for drug-smoking pipes.

Agents recovered two ounces of crystal meth, small amounts of cocaine and marijuana.


Swimmer pulled from water dies

A swimmer pulled from the water Sunday near Ulehawa Beach Park in Nanakuli died Monday night at St. Francis Medical Center-West. The medical examiner's office identified the victim as Siofio Bloomfield, 14. A cause of death has yet to be determined.


Arrest follows machete attack

Police arrested an 18-year-old man Monday in the parking lot of Honolulu Community College for allegedly attacking a man with a machete during a July 3 traffic dispute on Dillingham Boulevard and North King Street.

The suspect, who has no permanent local address, was booked for attempted second-degree murder and first-degree terroristic threatening. The alleged victim, a 28-year-old Kane'ohe man, called police Monday after seeing the suspect in the vehicle.

Police said two men attacked the victim July 3. One had a hatchet and the other a machete.


Teen charged in assault case

Eighteen-year-old Isaac Valdez was charged with first-degree assault Monday after Family Court waived its jurisdiction over him. Valdez is accused of punching a 17-year-old boy in the face during a party in Kailua Nov. 2, causing permanent damage to one of the boy's eyes. Valdez is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail.
