BIIF to crown champs in both divisions

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation will have distinct Division I and Division II football champions to represent the league for the two state tournaments.

After a single-round regular season, the top three Division I teams and the top three Division II teams will enter separate playoffs, BIIF executive secretary Roy Fujimoto said. With the advent of the Division II state tournament, the league predetermined that Hilo, Kea'au, Kealakehe and Waiakea will be Division I, while Hawai'i Prep, Honoka'a, Ka'u, Kohala and Konawaena will be Division II.

The BIIF standings will combine both divisions because each of the nine teams play the others for an eight-game schedule. The top three teams of Division I, regardless of ranking in the overall standings, advance to the playoffs. The top-seeded team will draw a bye in the first week and will play the winner of the game between the next two seeds. The format holds for Division II teams.

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association and BIIF are the only leagues to have distinct Division I and II champions.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu will have an overall league champion. There will be a playoff if the Division I teams are tied after regular season play or if the top Division II team has an equal or better record than the top Division I team. Nevertheless, the regular season division champions will advance to their respective state tournaments.

The three-team Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation will crown an overall league champion, but send representatives to the Division I and Division II state tournaments. Perennial KIF power Waimea is the only declared Division II team in the KIF and has thus clinched a state tournament berth before playing a down. Kaua'i and Kapa'a have declared Division I status; the one with the best record gets the Division I state berth, even if Waimea has a better record.

The five-team Maui Interscholastic League has declared Baldwin, King Kekaulike and Maui with Division I status, while Lahainaluna and Pac-Three (St. Anthony, Seabury Hall and Ka'ahumanu Hou) are Division II.

The MIL will retain its double-round format, where if there are different champions in each round, a playoff will be held. If the overall champion is a Division I team, it will represent the MIL in the state Division I tournament. But if a Division II team wins the overall MIL title, it will play in the state Division I tournament. The runner-up Division II team will get the league's Division II state berth.
