Hilo unbeaten in World Series

Jeremy Crivello batted 3 for 4 with two doubles and seven RBIs to lead Hilo past Oregon, 11-2, in pool play of the Cal Ripken Majors (11-12) World Series at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md.

Kolten Wong, Jaycen-Cann Ferriera and Aisha Sueda each went 2 for 4 with a double.

Hilo (2-0) plays Keene, N.H. (1-1) today.

GOLF

• McLachlin advances: Parker McLachlin of Honolulu moved up 140 spots in the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship and advanced to match play at the Pittsburgh Field Club at Oakmont, Pa.

McLachlin shot a 3-under-par 67 yesterday for a two-day total of 143, tying him for 13th place.

John Holmes of Campbellsville, Ky., earned medalist honors after shooting 68—138.

Match play starts today.

• Mullen wins by one: Oahu Country Club's Jerry Mullen won the Aloha Section PGA Assistant Professional Championship yesterday at Ko Olina Golf Club.

Mullen closed with a 1-under-par 71 for a tournament total of 141 and a one-stroke victory over Mauna Kea Resort assistant Kevin Hayashi (73—142).

By winning, Mullen qualified for the 2003 TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship, Nov. 6-9 at The PGA Golf Club (Dye Course) in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The 45-man field consists of the 2002 Champion, the Assistant Champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections and a representative from the Australian PGA, the PGA of Great Britain and the Canadian PGA.

• Wie on TV tomorrow: Hawai'i's Michelle Wie will be part of The Golf Channel's live coverage of the Bay Mills Open Players Championship, beginning tomorrow. Wie starts high school Monday at Punahou.

The 13-year-old is playing in the Canadian Tour event on a sponsor's exemption from The Golf Channel.

Live coverage from Wild Bluff Golf Course, in Brimley, Mich., runs from 5 to 8 a.m. tomorrow. Wie tees off at 2:10 a.m. HST. The tournament will be shown from 6 to 8 a.m. the final three days.

Wie, the second female to play in a Canadian Tour event, is expected to join host Brian Anderson and analyst Curt Byrum in the booth for post-round coverage.

By the time she starts school, Wie will have traveled nearly 20,000 miles this summer to play in seven tournaments, on two professional tours and in national amateur events. She won the U.S. Women's Public Links and tied for 39th at the U.S. Women's Open.

Cathy Sherk, former Canadian and U.S. Amateur champion who is in the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, was the first woman to play on the Canadian Tour. She qualified for the 1989 Timex-BIC Ontario Open.
